BIC, BMF, CRC and Batelco team up for more action

BIC, Sakhir – Monday, October 27, 2008:

Bahrain International Circuit has announced that preparations for the second season of the Batelco 2000CC Challenge are now in full swing following the press launch last night.

During the press launch Bahrain International Circuit, Bahrain Motor Federation and Batelco management disclosed that they would once again be partnering up to give the Kingdom another thrilling season of the popular 2.0-litre series due to premiere on November 6-7-8 as a support race to the exciting Gulf Air Desert 400 V8 Supercars race.

Martin Whitaker, Chief Executive Officer at BIC, highlighted during the press launch that following a highly successful 2007/2008 season, this year BIC would be stepping up as official promoter to the racing series. He added that the decision to have the first round of the series support the upcoming V8 Desert 400 round was one which would see the series gain further recognition by standing on a platform next to top international races making their way to BIC including the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia and the DHL Gulf Radical Cup.

He also added that local racing talents would have their chance to exhibit their skills, aboard the series organized by the CRC and promoted by the BIC, in front of thousands of spectators in their self-built cars prepared to BMF sporting regulations.

Last season witnessed a superb turnout of drivers participating in the series which sports a unique element that does not involve large financial cost for car preparation. With car preparation and repair left largely down to the driver, it is their call to decide what they choose to modify and leave provided they adhere to the regulations.

Also speaking at the press conference was Bahrain Motor Federation President, Shaikh Abdulla bin Isa Al Khalifa, who highlighted that last season’s turnout saw a great number of talented drivers participate in the inaugural season.

He highlighted that this was one of the most popular locally bred series in the Kingdom with many local aspiring drivers making their start in racing in the Batelco 2000CC Challenge. He added that it was superb to see that the Batelco-sponsored season opener would be sidelining the Gulf Air Desert 400 V8 Supercars Race. He added that this year will see the prizes awarded a little differently than last year. He stressed that it was the Challenge’s aim to spur on drivers and give them the motivation to make it to the top of the leaderboard. By limiting the monetary prizes but increasing the amounts for the top drivers and not all, drivers would have the incentive to step up the game.

He also added that top prize for the overall winner of the Challenge will be 3,000 Bahraini dinars whilst those in second, third and fifth positions will also receive end of season prizes. Shaikh Abdulla also extended his sincere thanks to Batelco, the BMF, CRC and BIC for this fruitful partnership and looked forward to another spectacular season.

With just weeks to go until the start of the season, it was also unveiled that 14 drivers and cars had already registered for the first round of the Batelco 2000CC Challenge and many more were preparing their vehicles for the upcoming rounds. As the series will consist of eight rounds, the organizers were hoping to see a full grid as the season progresses.

Batelco CEO, Peter Kaliaropoulos, highlighted that last year saw a very successful season as title sponsor of the Batelco 2000CC Challenge and this is what led Batelco to sign an agreement to support the Championship for another two years. He also added that Batelco promised a stronger presence throughout the Challenge and stressed that they were looking to develop this into a partnership, as well as supporter of the drivers, and not just a sponsor.  Following a highly successful first season he thanked Bahrain International Circuit, Bahrain Motor Federation and the Circuit Racing Club for all their hard work and efforts and looked forward to an even more exciting season this year.

Whitaker added that this year will see raffle draws for fans and spectators to look forward to in every round. He added that there will also be a prize during each round for the driver who brings in the most spectators during the day. He explained the driver with the greatest following of supporters on the day will receive an additional prize.

Whitaker also extended his warmest appreciation to leading telecommunications company, Batelco, for their support as title sponsor. He added that fans and spectators would be able to catch the season opener this November 6-7-8 as the Batelco 2000CC Challenge supports the upcoming Gulf Air Desert 400 V8 Supercars race.

With this event being a spectacular day out for the family, it will also be a chance to show Bahrain’s aspiring drivers some support. Meanwhile, tickets for the remaining rounds of the season will be two dinars for adults and one dinar for children.
