As the third round of the Batelco 2000CC Challenge gets underway today, organizers have confirmed that Bahraini autocross champion, Shaikh Jaber bin Ali Al Khalifa, will be participating in the fourth round of the season due to support the Grand Racing Weekend on January 23-24.

Having witnessed much action in the opening rounds of the season, Shaikh Jaber will now be adding more intense competition to the mix making the second season an even more gripping one.

Shaikh Jaber has long been involved in motorsport and a proven track record in racing both locally and internationally. Having picked up much attention in the autocross races for three consecutive seasons from 1994 to 1997 he has also raced aboard the Star Racing Teamand managed to pick up a win in the Jordan Rumman Hill Climb of 1997. Moving further afield, Shaikh Jaber has also joined in endurances races on the Nürburgring and won several rounds of the Middle East Rally Championship, picked up a victory in drag racing and the Porsche Carrera Cup organized at Bahrain International Circuit. To add to his list of achievements, he has also participated in the 24-hour race in Dubai in 2006.

Speaking of his participation, Shaikh Jaber will be racing aboard the Honda Integra Type-R prepared in Japan in line with the Batelco 2000CC Challenge’s regulations. Shaikh Jaber said: “I haven’t had the chance to prepare my car exactly how I wanted as I have had to be in the U.S.A. to study but the car that I have registered for this Challenge is one I had previously participated with and is a limited edition car available only in Japan.”

He added: “It is really exciting for me to be participating in a local series and to see that all the cars involved have been prepared by all-Bahraini team outfits that are highly qualified and experienced. For this reason I am fully supporting the Challenge, currently in its second season, and have also taken on an all-Bahraini mechanical team.”

As for his reasons behind choosing a Honda, as well as Honda being a popular choice in the series, he added: “The reason behind the majority of cars participating in the Batelco 2000CC Challenge being Hondas is because they have a top performance for this nature of racing. It also doesn’t require many modifications in order for it to be suitable for racing. Also, the rules of the Challenge stipulate that not many modifications can be made to the car and Honda lends itself well to this, as they do not require many changes. In addition, spare parts are readily available for Hondas which is also an element we have to take into consideration.”

He also said: “The prize money, courtesy of Batelco, is also a good incentive for drivers, as it can also cover the costs for modifying and repair work that may need to be done on the car throughout the season.”

Motorsport fans and enthusiasts can watch the competition heat up today, Friday 9 January, during the third round of the Batelco 2000CC Challenge. Organised by the Circuit Racing Club, under the Bahrain Motor Federation, the second round of the National Sprint Championship will also sideline as the excitement begins from 9.30am and will continue through to 6pm.
